Did you know? Permafrost can exist in mountains when it is absent in nearby valleys because the climate is colder at high elevations. Permafrost is also more common beneath shaded mountain slopes, which face north in the Northern Hemisphere (e.g. in the Rocky Mountains and the European Alps) and south in the Southern Hemisphere (e.g., in the Andes).
