The highest temperature at which soil, water, ice and air can coexist at equilibrium. In soils, the freezing-point depression is due mainly to capillarity and surface adsorption. It depends on soil particle effects (curvature and nature of soil particle surfaces), pressure, and the effects of dissolved solids in the pore water. The freezing-point depression can often be determined from the ground temperature profile where it is the difference between the temperature at the base of the ice-bearing permafrost and 0°C.
