An ice-wedge cast is a wedge of secondary filling. When the permafrost thawed, the ice wedge melted and the enclosing and overlying sediments collapsed into the resulting trough. An ice-wedge cast is one of the few acceptable criteria indicating the earlier presence of permafrost. The term "fossil ice wedge" is not recommended because ice is no longer present.
