Sorted polygons commonly occur in extensive patterns, most frequently on nearly horizontal surfaces, and on slopes of less then 20°. They range in size from 10 cm to about 10 m. In places, small sorted polygons occur in the central areas of larger polygons. Central areas have a concentration of fines, with or without stones. The bordering stones tend to increase in size with the size of the polygons, but to decrease with depth, regardless of the size of the polygons.
