Thermal erosion is a dynamic process involving the wearing away by thermal means (i.e., the melting of ice), and by mechanical means (i.e., hydraulic transport). Thermal erosion is distinct from the development of thermokarst terrain, which results from thermal melting followed by subsidence of the ground but without hydraulic transport of earth materials. An example of the combined thermal and mechanical effects of moving water is the formation of a thermo-erosional niche.
