The zero curtain results from the dissipation of the latent heat of fusion of water during freezing or thawing of the ground. It can persist for several hours or several weeks depending largely on the total water content of the ground, snowcover and air temperatures. Although the zero curtain can occur in non- permafrost areas, it is most pronounced in permafrost areas, especially during freezing of the active layer. The zero curtain is not only evident in freezing and thawing of undisturbed natural terrain but is also an important factor with respect to frost action, refreezing of the ground (backfill or slurry) around foundations, etc. and can have a major effect on the thermal regime of the active layer and of the permafrost.
